Robert Selden GARNETT, Congress, VA (1789-1840)
GARNETT Robert Selden , a Representative from Virginia; born at ``Mount Pleasant,'' near Loretto, Essex County, Va., April 26, 1789; attended the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University); studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Lloyds, Va.; member of the State house of delegates in 1816 and 1817; elected as a Republican to the Fifteenth, Sixteenth, and Seventeenth Congresses, reelected as a Crawford Republican to the Eighteenth Congress, and elected as a Jacksonian candidate to the Nineteenth Congress (March 4, 1817-March 3, 1827); was not a candidate for renomination in 1826; resumed the practice of law in Lloyds; died on his estate, ``Champlain,'' near Lloyds, Essex County, Va., August 15, 1840; interment in the family burying ground on his estate.
