Lewis Alexander BRIGHAM, Congress, NJ (1831-1885)

BRIGHAM Lewis Alexander , a Representative from New Jersey; born at New York Mills, Oneida County, N.Y., January 2, 1831; attended the district schools and Whitestown Seminary, Whitesboro, N.Y.; was graduated from Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y., in 1849; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1855 and commenced practice in New York City; superintendent of public schools, Bergen, N.J., 1866-1870; member of the board of police commissioners of Jersey City 1874-1876; member of the State house of assembly in 1877; elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1879-March 3, 1881); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1880 to the Forty-eighth Congress; resumed the practice of law in New York City; died in Jersey City, N.J., February 19, 1885; interment in Old Bergen Church Cemetery.
