Lancelot PHELPS, Congress, CT (1784-1866)

PHELPS Lancelot , a Representative from Connecticut; born in Windsor, Conn., November 9, 1784; moved with his father to Colebrook, Conn., in 1794; attended the common schools; studied medicine and commenced practice in Colebrook, Litchfield County, Conn.; also engaged in agricultural and mercantile pursuits in Hitchcockville (now Riverton), Conn.; returned to Colebrook; held various local offices; member of the state house of representatives in 1817, 1819-1821, 1824, 1827, 1828, and 1830; elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress and reelected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1835-March 3, 1839); died in Colebrook, Conn., September 1, 1866; interment in Center Cemetery, Winsted, Conn.
