John TAFFE, Congress, NE (1827-1884)

TAFFE John , a Representative from Nebraska; born in Indianapolis, Ind., January 30, 1827; completed preparatory studies; studied law; was admitted to the bar in Indianapolis, Ind.; moved to Nebraska in 1856; member of the Territorial house of representatives in 1858 and 1859; member of the Territorial council in 1860 and 1861 and served as president; during the Civil War enlisted in the Union Army and served as major in the Second Regiment, Nebraska Volunteer Cavalry; returned to Omaha, Nebr.; elected as a Republican to the Fortieth, Forty-first, and Forty-second Congresses (March 4, 1867-March 3, 1873); chairman, Committee on Territories (Forty-second Congress); resumed the practice of law; receiver of the public land office in North Platte, Nebr., where he died March 14, 1884; interment in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Omaha, Nebr.
