Edward James PATTEN, Congress, NJ (1905-1994)

PATTEN Edward James , a Representative from New Jersey; born in Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, N.J., August 22, 1905; attended the public schools of Perth Amboy; graduated from the Newark Normal School in 1927, the Rutgers Law School, Newark, N.J., in 1927, and Rutger University, New Brunswick, N.J., in 1928; was admitted to the bar in 1927 and began the practice of law in Perth Amboy; teacher in the public schools of Elizabeth, N.J., 1927-1934; mayor of Perth Amboy, 1934-1940; county clerk, Middlesex County, 1940-1954; secretary of state, State of New Jersey, 1954-1962; director and counsel of the Woodbridge National Bank, 1935-1962; elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-eighth and to the eight succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1963-January 3, 1981); was not a candidate for reelection in 1980 to the Ninety-seventh Congress; was a resident of Perth Amboy, N.J., until his death on September 17, 1994.
