René Auguste Chouteau

One of the family of American fur traders from New Orleans, with his half brother Jean Pierre Chouteau and two of his sons Auguste Pierre and Pierre. He went on a trading expedition to Illinois country and established the post that became St. Louis in 1764. Friendly relations with the Osage enabled him to extend the business considerably; from 1794 to 1802 he held a monopoly on the Osage trade. He was a prominent financier for St. Louis business and trade.
