After 23 seasons as head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Tom Osborne would never again have to worry about never winning a national championship.
That's because Osborne took home his first national championship after a 13–0 season and a come-from-behind, 24–17, victory over Miami in the Orange Bowl. Entering in the season Osborne's team had won 210 regular season games, but were 8–13 in bowl games. Led by quarterback Tommie Frazier, and bolstered by two Corey Schlesinger touchdowns in the second half, Nebraska had an Orange Bowl victory and its first title since 1971 and 1972.
Undefeated Big Ten Champion Penn State rolled, 38–20, over Oregon in the Rose Bowl, but was a distant second to Nebraska in both polls.
Meanwhile, history repeated itself in Ann Arbor on Sept. 24. Ten seasons after Doug Flutie's Hail Mary toss in Miami, Colorado quarterback Kordell Stewart beat No. 4 Michigan by one point when he tossed a pass 64 yards to teammate Michael Westbrook in the back of the endzone on the game's final play.
Colorado running back Rashaan Salaam held off Ki-Jana Carter and Kerry Collins of Penn State as well as Div. 1–AA star Steve McNair to win the Heisman Trophy.
