An award-winning stage actress, she has appeared mostly in supporting roles on film. Her movies credits include Grease (1978), Without a Trace (1983), Heartburn (1986), Six Degrees of Separation (1993), Smoke (1995), To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995), Up Close and Personal (1996), Moll Flanders (1996), and Le Divorce (2003). This Radcliffe grad continues to keep one foot in the traditional theater, however, winning a Tony in 1985 for her performance in A Day in the Life of Joe Egg. She played first lady Abbey Bartlet in the TV series The West Wing (2001–2005).
