Similarities in Success of 1998 Broncos and 1972 Dolphins
Besides their tremendous success, the Broncos and '72 Dolphins show other striking similarities. Each revolved around a top notch running attack, buoyed by a solid offensive line. While the Broncos look to MVP-candidate Terrell Davis to shoulder the bulk of their top-rated ground game, the Dolphins achieved the same result from a three-headed machine known as Mercury Morris, Jim Kiick, and Csonka. In 1972, Morris and Csonka became the first duo to each rush for 1,000 yards in the same season. This year, Davis threatens Eric Dickerson's all-time single-season rushing record.
Earlier in the season, when Broncos' starting QB Elway missed all or parts of six games due to an injured hamstring, unknown Bubby Brister took over and played the best football of his professional life to keep the streak alive. In 1972, Dolphins' Hall of Famer Bob Griese broke his ankle in week five, clearing the way for journeyman Earl Morrall to become the hero. Morrall flawlessly guided Miami to victory in that game and the next ten, before finally giving the reins back to Griese in the AFC Championship against the Steelers.
