Italian PM To Form New Government: On Friday, October 21, 2022, Italy's leader, Giorgia Meloni, formally accepted the role of creating the next government at the helm of the country's most right-wing administration since World War II. She and her government will be sworn in as Italy's first female prime minister on Saturday. She succeeds Mario Draghi, a very different leader who was called in to head a country fighting to recover from the impacts of the coronavirus and the economic crisis.[1]

United States And Russia In Talks Over Ukraine War: On Saturday, October 22, 2022, The US Defense Minister undertook phone conversations with his Russian colleague after a pro-Kremlin official said they were transforming Ukraine's southern city of Kherson into a "fortress" as Kyiv's soldiers advanced. There were few specifics regarding the talk between Russia's Sergei Shoigu and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, but it was acknowledged that they addressed Ukraine. The Russian military ministry, on the other hand, the Russian military ministry stated that "topical concerns of world security, including the situation in Ukraine, were discussed."[2

President Trump To Testify On J6 Panel: On Saturday, October 22, 2022, Former US President Donald Trump was asked to testify under oath and deliver papers to the House of Representatives Committee probing his supporters' Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol. The committee's move comes after a former Trump aide, Steve Bannon, was sentenced to four months in federal jail for refusing to comply with the panel's probe.[3]

Chinese President Begins His Third Term In Office: On Sunday, October 23, 2023, Xi Jinping, China's president, unveiled a new leadership team loaded with close loyalists and legally began his unprecedented third term as China's ruler. Xi also disclosed the entire makeup of the 24-member Politburo, which contains no women for the first time in at least 25 years, underlining the low level of female representation in the Party's upper echelons.[4]

New English PM Vows To Lead The UK Out Of Economic Crisis: On Tuesday, October 25, 2022, Rishi Sunak became Britain's third Prime Minister two months after meeting King Charles at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday. He promised to steer the country out of a deep economic crisis and to restore faith in politics. Sunak promptly reappointed Jeremy Hunt as his finance minister after becoming Prime Minister, a move aimed to reassure markets that had balked at his predecessor's debt-fueled economic ambitions.[5]

China Accused Of Illegal Police Base In Netherlands: On Wednesday, October 26, 2022, The Chinese government was accused of building at least two unregistered "police stations" in the Netherlands. The Dutch media proved that the "overseas service station," which promised diplomatic assistance, is being used to repress Chinese dissidents in Europe. China's foreign ministry has denied the Dutch charges.[6]

Germany To Legalise Cannabis: On Wednesday, October 26, 2022, Personal possession of up to 30g has been suggested by the German government. The bill still has to be approved by both the European Parliament and the European Commission. The plan, according to Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, the plan might become law in 2024. Adults would also be authorized to cultivate three cannabis plants at home under the German plan. According to Klaus Holetschek of the CSU, it "sends a terrible signal to Germany and Europe." He believes legalization would encourage "drug tourism" in Germany.[7]

Fatal Apartment Fire Kills 6 In Wisconsin: On Friday, October 21, 2022, six individuals were confirmed killed in a predawn apartment fire in suburban Milwaukee on Friday, and police report that a criminal investigation has been launched in search of any evidence that the incident was intentionally ignited. The fire was reported soon after 5 a.m. at a four-unit apartment home in the hamlet of Hartland, Westoning, about 25 miles west of Milwaukee, according to Torin Misko, the town's police chief, during a press conference at the site.[1]

Gunman Kills Two In St. Louis: On Monday, October 24, 2022, two people were killed when a shooter stormed into a high school in St. Louis before being shot dead by police. Several other people were hurt in the horrific incident, sure to revive the debate over gun regulation in the United States. The White House condemned the tragedy's unjustified brutality and asked for more action to reduce gun fatalities; the education secretary echoed thoughts in a tweet.[2]

Ash Carter Dies At 68: On Tuesday, October 25, 2022, The family of Ash Carter, who served as Secretary of Defense under President Barack Obama, revealed in a statement that he died at the age of 68 after suffering a sudden cardiac attack. During Carter's tenure as Secretary of Defense, the United States military allowed women to serve in the military and lifted a restriction on openly serving transgender service personnel.[3]

Apple Set To Comply With Universal Charging Cable: On Wednesday, October 26, 2022, Following the announcement that all phones sold after the autumn of 2024 must have USB-C charging ports, Apple said that it would eliminate the Lightning connector from its iPhones after European authorities ordered that all cellphones should have USB charging as standard within two years. Apple had previously rejected the requirement to switch phones to the standard cables, stating that "strict law mandating only one form of connection stifles rather than fosters innovation.”[2]

Climate Emergency As Greenhouse Gases Attains Record High Levels: On Wednesday, October 26, 2022, The World Meteorological Organization identified the highest year-on-year increase in methane concentrations since systematic studies began more than 40 years ago in 2020 and 2021. These greenhouse gases cause global warming, with the warming effect increasing by 50% between 1990 and 2021. These figures will be made public at the Cop27 UN climate summit in November when world leaders will assemble in Egypt to achieve agreements on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
