Tell us about your work---what do you do? I am the assistant to the vice president of marketing and sales. Some specific duties include corresponding with our domestic and international sales forces ; answering their questions about our books; providing them with supplies and samples ; writing correspondence ; working with our authors to set up book signings throughout the United States; selling rights to our books in Asia and India; and working with the vice-president to arrange and negotiate bulk sales to booksellers. What was your major? English and German Education. How did you get started in your career? I had moved to Boulder, Colo., and was looking for a career, other than teaching, in which my degree might be applicable. What experience do you need in this job? I had no experience in publishing. I was trained on the job. Describe a "typical" workday: First, I check my messages and in-box and then prioritize my day. If I need to correspond with any of our overseas sales force, I will do that first. The rest of the day is spent trying to empty my in-box. This might involve phoning authors, sales people or bookstores, writing correspondence, or running to the warehouse or customer service to track down orders. What is the hardest aspect of your job? I think what is most difficult for me is trying to organize my day knowing that if some unexpected crisis should arise, I will have to put everything on hold. And unexpected crises are a daily (sometimes hourly) occurrence. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? I think what I enjoy the most is the variety and pace of the job . Although sometimes the workload makes me crazy, I like that I am always busy and challenged . What are your suggestions for someone considering this field? If this career interests you, go for it! I meet many interesting people, am exposed to hundreds of new books and ideas, and learn a lot about sales and marketing in general. The pay is not great.
