Tell us about your work---what do you do? I inspect mines and tunnels for safety and make sure that they are within the proper codes and regulations demanded by the government. What skills are needed? You need to understand mining engineering and industrial engineering in general so you can assess if there is a health or safety risk involved. You must also have good people skills , because you deal with people-related situations all the time. What was your major? Geology How did you get started in your career? I got a job in the mines out of college. With my years of experience, I qualified for my current position. This is my third career change. What experience do you need in this job? You need to have good knowledge in mine tunneling and construction . Math experience is also very valuable. Describe your "typical" workday: There is no typical workday. I could spend all day writing reports, or I could be out all day conducting inspections . It changes everyday and nothing is ever typical. What is the hardest aspect of your job? Dealing with people can be difficult. Not a lot of people are happy when I tell them that their mine is in violation of the regulations. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? I guess the satisfaction of knowing that I am helping to keep workers and other people safe from dangerous conditions. What are your suggestions for someone considering this field?
