Tell us about your work-what do you do? I edit and write features about cinematography and its practitioners for an internationally distributed monthly trade publication. What skills are needed? Excellent command of English , good grammar and spelling , attention to detail , knowledge of film history and technology , facility with computers. What was your major? A.B. Cinema Studies/Culture and Communication M.A. Journalism How did you get started in your career? During my freshman year of college, I began covering local meetings for a daily newspaper on a part-time basis. I eventually wrote for two local weekly newspapers and began copy-editing as well. What experience do you need in this job? Feature writing , interview skills , knowledge of film industry and its trends, proofreading . Describe your "typical" workday: Field calls and emails from publicists pitching their films, edit 2-3 major features, do fact checking in film manuals and on Internet, solicit corrections from interviewees. What is the hardest aspect of your job? Writing for a largely professional audience without having a similarly technical background. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Seeing a good story I've written in print. What are your suggestions for someone considering this field?
