Tell us about your work---what do you do? I am involved in teaching teachers how to develop and conduct classes online. What skills are needed? A knowledge of the Internet , course management systems and various application software. In order to enhance a class, it is also good to know about multimedia . What was your major? My major was Speech Communications with a minor in Business . In December of 1999, I was the first graduate of the Master's of Science in Education with a specialty in Online Teaching and learning through California University at Hayward . How did you get started in your career? When I first graduated from college, I started teaching adults in an occupational center. After a few years, I joined a large corporation and became a technology consultant , trainer, and manager. Ultimately I ended up at a community college and finally at my current position with California Virtual Campus. What experience do you need in this job? You really must have an ability to work well with others and the experience gained over time in a training environment. Describe your "typical" workday: I check my email for relevant daily periodicals every morning. Any items of interest I forward to members of a listserv that includes mostly administrators and faculty of community colleges. I follow this by a good workout before I head to the office. I know it seems odd that for a "virtual" campus I would go to a physical office. Most days I do just that. What is the hardest aspect of your job? I never seem to have enough time. Sometimes I have to travel quite a bit. Last month, I was in a different city for three to five days each week. That wasn't fun. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? The most rewarding aspect for me is working with faculty members from the college or university level and sharing with them the components of developing online classes while understanding the way adults learn. What are your suggestions for someone considering this field? The most important thing is always be open to learning new things. In some ways, it can be frustrating to know I'll never know everything I need to know.
