The history of LGBT pride dates back to the 1950s and 1960s when organizations such as the Mattachine Society and Daughters of Bilitis held "Annual Reminders," protesting the fact that LGBT people did not have basic civil rights. LGBT pride marches were organized on a larger scale after June 28, 1969, when a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar located in New York City, caused a series of riots and protests. On the year anniversary of the Stonewall riots, Christopher Street Liberation Day was celebrated and included the first Gay Pride march in the United States. On that same weekend, gay activists organized marches in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago. By the second anniversary of Stonewall, Gay Pride marches took place in London, Paris, West Berlin, Stockholm, Boston, Milwaukee, and Dallas. In 1972, only three years after the Stonewall incident, Atlanta, Buffalo, Detroit, Washington D.C., Miami, and Philadelphia also held Gay pride marches on the anniversary.
In 2009, U.S. President Barack Obama declared June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. Several other countries observe LGBT month in June as well. Therefore, many gay pride celebrations are held in June, but the international LGBT community also has events all over the world and throughout the year.
Film festivals began when film societies and cine-clubs were formed in various countries such as France and Brazil during the 1920s. Unofficially, the first gay film festival was held in a San Francisco storefront in 1976. One year later, the Frameline Film Festival, also known as the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival, officially began. Since then, the festival has been held every June. The film festival draws 60,000 to 80,000 people annually, making it not only the oldest and largest gay film festival, but the most attended. As of 2012, LGBT film festivals are held around the world from Denmark to South Africa to New Zealand.
Throughout the year, several cities around the world host transgender events, including conferences, conventions, and workshops. These events range in their focus, some give transgenders a chance to meet and hang out, while other events offer seminars let by healthcare professionals.
