Georgieva, Kristalina (Kristalina Ivanova Georgieva-Kinova), 1953–, Bulgarian economist. She studied at the Karl Marx Higher Institute of Economics (now the Univ. of National and World Economy) and was an associate professor (1977–93) there. Georgieva worked for the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) from 1993 to 2010, rising from an environmental economist to director of the environment department (2000–2004) and then to vice president and corporate secretary (2008–10). From 2010 to 2014 she worked for the European Commission (EC) as commissioner for international cooperation, humanitarian aid, and crisis response, and from 2014 to 2016 she was EC vice president for budget and human resources. After returning to the World Bank as chief executive officer (2017–19), Georgieva succeeded Christine Lagarde as managing director of the International Monetary Fund (2019–).
