Duflo, Esther, 1972–, French-American economist, b. Paris, Ph.D. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1999. She has been a professor of economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 1999 and the Abdul Latif Jameel Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics since 2005. Duflo is a cofounder and codirector of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab, a research center devoted to designing and evaluating approaches to alleviating global poverty. In 2019 she shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with Abhijit Banerjee (her husband) and Michael Kremer for their work in helping to develop an innovative and experimental approach to alleviating global poverty. She was the founding editor of the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics (2007–16) and is the editor of American Economic Review (2017–). Her books include Poor Economics (2011), Handbook of Field Experiments, Vol. 1 and 2 (2017), and Good Economics for Hard Times (2019), all with Banerjee.
