Chambéry

Chambéry shäNbārēˈ [key], town, capital of Savoie dept., E France, in the Alpine trough. It is a communications and commerce center as well as a railway and air transport hub. Manufactures include metals and construction materials. An archiepiscopal see from the 5th cent., it was the capital of Savoy from 1232 to 1562. Among its old edifices is a 16th-century cathedral.
