Bobbio

Bobbio bôbˈbyō [key], town, in Emilia-Romagna, N central Italy. It is a commercial center and a summer resort. St. Columban founded a monastery there in 612, and during the 9th–12th cent. it was a center of European cultural life. The monastery later declined, and the invaluable manuscripts of its great library were dispersed in the 15th and 16th cent. The monastery itself was dissolved in the early 19th cent.
