Suva

Suva so͞oˈvä [key], city (1993 est. pop. 80,000), capital of Fiji, on the southeastern coast of Viti Levu island, S Pacific. It is a major shipping and commercial center of the S Pacific producing a variety of manufactures. Coconut oil and soap are manufactured; sugar, copra, gold, and tropical fruits are exported. Tourism is an important industry. The main campus of the National Univ. of Fiji and a campus of the Univ. of the South Pacific are there. Suva became the capital of Fiji in 1882. During World War II it was an important Allied airbase.
