Skara

Skara skäˈräˌ [key], city (1990 pop. 10,790), Skaraborg co., S Sweden. Situated in a farming region, it has industries that manufacture metal goods and footwear. Dating from at least the 9th cent., Skara is one of Sweden's oldest cities; the country's first bishopric was established there in the 11th cent. The city has also been an educational center since 1641, when Sweden's earliest institutions of higher learning were founded there. Skara has an imposing cathedral (12th cent.; restored 1894).
