Harrodsburg, city (2020 pop. 8,697,
seat of Mercer co., central Ky., S of Frankfort. It is a trade center in a
bluegrass area producing livestock, grain, and tobacco. Dairy products,
paper goods, optical lenses, and textiles are also made. Harrodsburg is a
tourist and resort city, with mineral springs. The oldest settlement W of
the Alleghenies, it was founded in 1774 by James Harrod. One of the settlement's early
leaders was George Rogers Clark. A state park contains a replica
of old Fort Harrod, where the state's first school was conducted. The
Pleasant Hill Shaker village is nearby.
