Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument, 4,913 sq mi (12,725 sq km), NW Atlantic Ocean, 130 mi (210 km) off the coast of Cape Cod; est. 2016. The monument is divided into two areas; one section includes four undersea mountains, known as seamounts, the other encompasses three underwater canyons that cut deep into the continental shelf. Comprising fragile marine ecosystems with rich biodiversity, it is home to deep-sea corals, endangered whales and sea turtles, other marine mammals, and deep-sea fish. It is the first U.S. marine monument in the Atlantic Ocean and is administered jointly by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
