Guelph

Guelph gwĕlf [key], city, S Ont., Canada, on the Speed River. It is an industrial and agricultural center located in one of Canada's most densely populated regions. Manufactures include electrical, construction, and farm equipment, textiles, clothing, fiberglass, and tobacco products. The Univ. of Guelph, comprising the Ontario Agricultural College (1874) and other institutions, was founded in 1964. The city was founded in 1827 by the Scottish novelist John Galt.
