Mangaluru

Mangaluru, formerly Mangalore măng-gəlôrˈ [key], city (1991 pop. 273,000), Karnataka state, SW India, on the Arabian Sea. A port, it trades in spices, rice, fish, nuts, and cardamom. Manufactures include roofing tiles, pottery, brick kilns, and ships. The city has an airport, major road and rail connections, and a diesel power station. It was the capital (13th cent.) of the Alupa kingdom. In the late 18th cent., Mangaluru was an important shipbuilding center. The British occupied the city in 1799.
