Sunita, Narain,
1961–, Indian writer and environmentalist, b. New Delhi, India,
graduated from University of Delhi, honorary degrees from Cranfield
University, University of Calcutta, University of Lausanne, and University
of Alberta. Sunita Narain is the Director General of New Delhi-based Center
for Science and Environment (CSE) and editor of Down To
Earth magazine. Narain campaigns, researches, and advocates on
issues of environment and sustainable development, with a particular focus
on climate change. In 2005, she was awarded the Padma Shri Award, the
fourth-highest civilian award in India. In 2016, Time
magazine selected her as one of the most influential people in the world.
The folllowing year she received "The Order of the Polar Star" award from
the Swedish Government in 2017. Her writings include Not in My
Backyard: Solid Waste Management in Indian Cities (2016, ed.),
Why I Should Be Tolerant (2016), and Conflicts
of Interest: My Journey through India's Green Movement (2017).
