Ord, Edward Otho Cresap, 1818–83, Union general in the American Civil War, b. Cumberland, Md. He commanded a brigade in Virginia (1861–62), was promoted to major general of volunteers, and fought at Iuka and Corinth, Miss. (1862). In the last stage of the Vicksburg campaign (1863), Ord led the 13th Corps. Returning to the Virginia theater in 1864, he served briefly as commander in the Shenandoah valley, and in the final operations against Robert E. Lee he led successively the 8th Corps, the 18th Corps, and the Army of the James. Ord commanded various departments after the war. In 1881 he was made a major general on the retired list.
