Newsom, Gavin Christopher, 1967– American businessman and politician, b. San Francisco. He was a cofounder (1991) of the PlumpJack Group, whose businesses grew from a wine store to include wineries, restaurants, hotels, and other establishments, before he entered politics. A liberal Democrat, he served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors (1997–2004), as mayor of San Francisco (2004–2011), and as lieutenant governor of California (2011–2019) under Jerry Brown before he was elected governor of California in 2018. He is the author of Citizenville (2013), about citizen involvement in democracy in the digital age.
