Mahgoub, Muhammad Ahmad [key], 1908–76, Sudanese political leader. After twice serving as Sudan's minister of foreign affairs (1956–58, 1964–65), he was elected prime minister (1965) but was forced by the constituent assembly to resign in the following year. He was again elected prime minister in 1967, and in August of that year he hosted an Arab summit conference designed to coordinate strategy against Israel. Mahgoub's government was deposed (1969) in a coup led by Muhammed Jaafar al-Nimeiri and other left-wing officers, and subsequently he largely lived abroad. A writer, Mahgoub has published several volumes of poetry in Arabic. His name is also spelled Mahjoub and Mahjub.
