Guebuza, Armando Emílio [key], 1943–, Mozambican business executive and politician, president of Mozambique (2005–15). A longtime supporter of the independence movement and member of the Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo), he relocated to Zambia in 1964 to join the group and later moved on to Tanzania, where he joined its armed wing. In 1992 he led the Frelimo delegation in peace talks with the rebel group Renamo, negotiating an accord that led to multiparty elections in 1994. He became Frelimo's general secretary in 2002 and, when President Chissano stepped down, was elected Mozambique's president in 2004. Guebuza succeeded Chissano as party president in 2005. He was reelected in 2009. He was succeeded by Filipe Nyusi in 2015, and then stepped down as party president.
