Brough, Louise (Louise Brough Clapp) [key], 1923–2014, American tennis player, b. Oklahoma City. A champion in the 1940s and 50s, renowned for her powerful serve-and-volley game and crushing topspin serve, she won 35 Grand Slam championships, 6 in singles, 21 in women's doubles, and 8 in mixed doubles competition. Brough was ranked number one in U.S. national play in 1947 and number one in the world in 1955. She was also undefeated in her 22 Wightman Cup matches. A superb doubles player, she won 20 women's doubles championships with her close friend and singles rival, Margaret Osborne duPont. From 1942 to 1950 Brough and duPont were undefeated in U.S. doubles play, a record.
