Huggins, Miller James, 1878–1929, American baseball player and manager, b. Cincinnati. The diminutive “Mighty Mite” was a scrappy second baseman for the Cincinnati Reds (1904–9) and St. Louis Cardinals (1910–16). A switch-hitting lead-off batter, he was adept at drawing walks (1,002 overall) and stealing bases. Huggins also managed the Cards from 1913 to 1917. In 1918 he became the manager of the New York Yankees, remaining their skipper until his death. With players that included Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, he won six American League pennants (1921–23, 1926–28) and three World Series (1923, 1927–28). He was named to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964.
