Buto

Buto byo͞oˈtō [key], ancient city, N Egypt, in the Nile delta. The precise location is uncertain. Capital of Lower Egypt in prehistoric times (before 3100 b.c.), it had a temple dedicated to the serpent goddess Buto. During the Saïte period (663–525 b.c.) it was revived as an important religious center.
