Sloane, T(homas) O'Conor, 1851–1940, American scientist, lecturer, writer, and periodical editor, Ph.D. Columbia, 1876. Sloane was a member of the editorial staff of the Scientific American, where he served as editor; Science and Invention, where he was managing editor; and other periodicals including Amazing Stories, a pioneering science-fiction magazine that he edited (1929–38). He taught at Seton Hall College and was known also for his invention of various scientific instruments and his work in practical electricity. His publications included such books as The Electrician's Handy Book, Electricity Simplified, Standard Electrical Dictionary, Motion Picture Projection, Liquid Air and Liquefaction of Gases; many scientific articles; and translations.
