  • Aug. 6, Dire Dawa, Ethiopia: flash floods on the Dechatu River killed more than 200 persons with many still missing.
  • Aug. 10, London, U.K.: police arrest 24 Bristih-born Muslims, most of whom have ties to Pakistan, who had plotted to blow up as many as 10 planes using liquid explosives. Officials say details of the plan were similar to other schemes devised by al-Qaeda. Airports all over the world beef up security. British officials charge 11 people in connection to the suspected plot. Eight are charged with conspiracy to commit murder and preparing acts of terrorism. The others are charged with lesser crimes.
  • Aug., India and Pakistan: flooding from heavy rains killed more than 300.
  • July-Aug. , Ethiopia: flooding in Ethiopia since July has killed at least 870 people.
  • Aug. 22, Donetsk, Ukraine: a Russian Pulkovo Airlines, Tupolev 154, flying from the Black Sea resort town of Anapa to St. Petersburg , reported a fire on board and crashed in stormy weather, killing all 170, including 45 children, on board.
  • Aug. 27, Lexington, Ky.: Comair Flight 5191, a Bombardier commuter jet, crashed on takeoff, killing 49. The plane took off from the wrong runway which was not long enough for the jet.
