Brewer's: Calliope

[Kal'-li-o-pe, 4 syl., Greek, kaloz, py beautiful voice ]. The muse of epic or heroic poetry. Her emblems are a stylus and wax tablets. The painting of this Muse by Ercolana Ercolanetti (1615-1687) and her statue by Clementi (who died in 1580) are very celebrated.

The Greek word is Kallioph, in which the i is short. Erroneously called “Calilope.”
