Hope Hicks to Resign
On March 1, it was announced that President Trump’s communications director Hope Hicks would resign. A reason for her departure has not yet been released. (Reuters)

Man Shoots Himself in Front of White House
On March 3, an unidentified man shot himself in the head in front of the White House. The man reportedly pulled out a handgun and fired a few shots before turning the gun on himself. No other injuries were reported. (Reuters)

Other States May Follow West Virginia Protests
After a walkout performed by West Virginian teachers, other states have expressed concern on March 4. Oklahoma and Arizona are two states where teachers have expressed their intentions to echo the West VIrginia walkout. (Reuters)

West Virginia Teachers’ Strike Officially Over
On March 6, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice signed the bill awarding teachers a 5% pay increase. The strike caused schools to be closed for a total of nine days. (CNN)

Shooting at Alabama School
One student was killed and another was taken into custody after a shooting at an Alabama high school on March 8. Investigators believe the shooting was “accidental,” but more details have yet to be released. (CNN)

Three Dead in California Veterans Home Shooting
On March 9, Albert Wong, a former veteran, killed three women during a standoff at a California veterans home. The gunman was found dead and used to be a patient at Pathway Home, where the tragic incident took place. (CNN)

Helicopter Crash in New York City
On March 11, a helicopter crashed in New York City’s East River, killing the six passengers, and injuring the pilot. Before the crash, the pilot called in for help regarding a failed engine. (Reuters)

Stephen Hawking Dies
On March 13, at the age of 76, Stephen Hawking died peacefully in his home. Various people have come together to honor the life of this great scientist. (Reuters)

Teacher Accidentally Fires Gun
During a safety demonstration on March 13, a Northern California teacher accidentally fired off his gun, injuring one student. The police have stated the injuries are minor. (CNN)

Package Bomb in Austin
On March 14, a package bomb sent to a home in Austin claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy. This bomb is the third sent to a home in the last ten days. The other two claimed the lives of two people and injured another two. Investigations are ongoing. (CNN)

National Student Walkout
On March 14, students around the country walked out of class at 10:00 a.m. for seventeen minutes. The purpose of the walkout was both to pay tribute to the victims of the Parkland High shooting and to protest for stricter gun laws. (CNN)

Rex Tillerson and John McEntee Fired
On March 14, President Trump fired US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. John Sullivan will replace Tillerson when he officially leaves on March 31 until President Trump’s nomination of Mike Pompeo is approved. President Trump’s personal aide John McEntee was also fired. (BBC)

House Passes Bill Regarding School Safety
On March 14, a bill regarding school safety was passed by the House, yet no gun restrictions were in the legislation. Instead, the bill is set to increase the budget for metal detectors, security, and locks. (Reuters)

Florida Bridge Collapses
On March 16, a pedestrian bridge collapsed in South Florida, killing six people. The bridge was created in a sped-up process and engineers examined it days before the collapse. Police are still going through the rubble but don’t expect to find more victims. (CNN)

Andrew McCabe Fired
On March 17, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe days before his retirement. Sessions stated that the termination was due to information he found during an internal review. (BBC)

LSU Fraternity Members Indicted
On March 17, four members of LSU’s Phi Delta Theta fraternity were indicted in the hazing death of a fellow student. The death occurred in September 2017, and police arrested the suspects late October. Various other suspects were not convicted. (CNN)

Trump Calls for Death Penalty for Opioid Dealers
On March 19, during a speech in New Hampshire, President Trump unveiled his plan to curb the opioid epidemic. President Trump’s anti-addiction plan includes implementing the death sentence for drug dealers and increasing funding to curb addiction. (Reuters)

School Shooting in Maryland
On March 20, a 17-year-old boy opened fire on his fellow students at a Maryland high school. Two students were injured and the gunman later died after a gunfight with police. One of the victims, a 16-year-old girl, died in the hospital a few days later. (Reuters)

Austin Bomber Believed to be Dead
On March 21, a sixth explosion in Austin took the life of the suspected Austin Bomber. The tirade lasted three weeks, and five bombs detonated, killing two people. The suspect, Mark Anthony Conditt, recorded a 25-minute video of himself confessing to the bombs, though he did not provide a reason as to why he chose the victims he did. (CNN)

On March 23, hundreds of thousands of people marched in major cities to protest guns. The march has ignited the #NeverAgain movement, which was sparked by recent school shootings. (BBC)

Officers not Charged in Alton Sterling Shooting
On March 27, it was announced that Louisiana will not charge two officers involved in the 2016 shooting of Alton Sterling. Evidence has been said to show that the officers’ actions were justified. (Reuters)

Man Arrested for Washington D.C. Package Bombs
On March 27, a man was arrested on suspicion that he was involved in the package bombs sent to the CIA and military installments throughout Washington D.C. The suspect, Thanh Cong Phan, has been known to send letters to the government and is thought to have a mental illness. Investigations are ongoing. (Reuters)

Caroline Sunshine Joins Trump Press Office
On March 28, it was announced that former Disney star Caroline Sunshine would be joining President Trump’s press office. Sunshine recently completed an internship at the White House and will now receive a position as a press assistant. (BBC)

Driver Plows into San Francisco Pedestrians
On March 28, a driver plowed into five people walking along a San Francisco street. One of the victims died and the driver fled the scene. He was later arrested, and police claim there is no threat to the public. (Reuters)

Walkout in Oklahoma Still On
On March 31, after a bill raising teacher wages was passed in Oklahoma, the union stated that the pay raise wasn’t enough. Walkouts to protest teacher salaries and school budgets are still scheduled to occur in Oklahoma on Monday, April 1. (CNN)
