An uninspired revival despite strong performances from Rees and Threlfall (last seen together on Broadway in Nicholas Nickleby.) Like other works by Anouilh, this play focuses on the conflicts that arise when a group of immoral aristocrats comes face to face with one pure, sincere character—Lucile (Gunn). When the Count (Threlfall) falls genuinely in love with Lucile, the delicate world of the debauched is threatened, leading to nasty verbal skirmishes and devastation for all parties. There's lots of talking, in speeches that require precise, finely tuned execution. Unfortunately, much of the cast seems to be finding their voice as they go, making this production tedious, long-winded and ultimately forgettable.
