Though Gergiev and co. have a long-held niche for Russian opera, they've broken out in this recording of the infrequently heard 1862 original version of Verdi's opera as it was performed in St. Petersburg. Comparing the two revisions reveals losses as well as gains, but the main appeal is Gergiev's nervy conducting, with performances by Galina Gorchakova and Olga Borodina.
