Feeling Strangely Fine

In spite of a quite striking debut disc in 1996 (Great Divide) Semisonic seemed destined for obscurity. But all that changed with this follow-up album, thanks in part to the killer lead single “Closing Time.” Guitarist/singer Dan Wilson's tale of barroom eyes and lust at last call wasn't the only thing the set had going for it. The surging “Singing in My Sleep” was one of the year's most memorable songs, and on other tracks like the piano-pounding, guitar snarling “All Worked Out” and “Never You Mind,” Semisonic brought their love of the '60s smack dab into the late '90s. A standout effort from a band that has truly arrived.
