In world music as in other kinds, stunning voices win more new audiences than ace bandleaders or instrumentalists. And one of the most stunning vocalists ever is Pakistan's Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the consensus master of the venerable Islamic religious mode qawwali, who died at the young age of 48, just before he was to have a liver transplant. The adventurous Khan has appeared in all sorts of disco and New Age formats, but the inexpensive Rapture anthology presents Khan's huge, soaring tones and vocal improvisations at their punchy best, accompanied mostly by handclaps, a male chorus, tabla drums and the earthy, hand-pumped harmonium organ. His boundless celebrations of divine love cause shivers like no others. Khan's intoxicating voice and stage presence will be sorely missed worldwide.
