Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie
- Maverick/Reprise
What a long, strange trip it's already been for young Alanis. Her public life began on a Canadian cable show, followed by two forgettable “teen heartthrob” pop records. Then she got angry and vengeful on the multi-platinum, critically acclaimed Jagged Little Pill. After a few years to decompress and a trip to India, she's out with a somewhat kinder, gentler album. SFIJ is full of not too subtle diary entries: “Thank U” and “Are You Still Mad.” Alanis brought back more than recipes from India. Led Zepplin's “Kashmir”-like sounds are all over this slickly produced, modern sounding CD, which proves that beauty and power can be found in adversity. It's as painful and pretty a CD as you'll hear this year.
