Ever spent time with a group of people whose dialogue consists mostly of in-jokes? Super Troopers, written by and starring the Broken Lizard comedy troupe, feels a lot like that. The actors exude confidence with each other and their quaintly wacky premise: a group of Vermont State Troopers faced with losing their jobs decide to pull surreal pranks on all the citizens they encounter. Like all goofy cop movies, there's a serious crime to be solved too.
The Lizards' long-term troupe interaction yields warm affability. It also means that sometimes they could have used an outside opinion to prevent some jokes from coming off as personal guffaws between the actors. Nevertheless, Super Troopers' high-spirited approach is a welcome shift away from standard laughs, and the Broken Lizard comedians display promise.
