Latest in the irony-soaked Scream series is Urban Legends: The Final Cut. A minor security guard (Loretta Devine) connects this sequel to its predecessor. The Final Cut opens at an anonymous New England college where film student Amy Mayfield (Jennifer Morrison) decides to create a serial killer movie based on urban legends. One undergrad's suspicious suicide kicks off a storm of bizarre murders that befall characters near (or at) Amy's filming. The line between the fiction and reality smudges, streaks, and smears: first time director John Ottman hasn't got the skills to blur these distinctions yet.
Scream 3 proved how quick irony and self-reflexiveness can sour into a pastiche of over-worked ideas. The Final Cut offers further support of this phenomenon. The weird thing is, however, the first one was worse. The sequel stands nowhere near originality, but it isn't idiotic all the time. Urban Legends: The Final Cut may be best categorized as Scream 2 1/2.
