Ed Harris's solid confidence works wonders for his role as a weary, skeptic Catholic priest whose job it is to debunk fake miracles. Unfortunately, he's sidled with a plot line dangerously similar to Stigmata. When a Chicago woman's saintliness seems verifiable, he encounters her beautiful, bitter, and abandoned daughter (Anne Heche). Sexual tension puts his vow of celibacy is put to the test. The actors render their relationship with intelligence and force, but The Third Miracle has other factors working against it: the end discards the beginning's promise and clambers down into a drama unworthy of the issues raised by Harris and Heche in the first part.
