With venomous acuity, Linklater and Bogosian examine a malcontent group of 20 year olds in an Anywhere, U.S.A. strip-mall town. The underachievers, stuck in that void between high school and the real world, converge in a convenience-store parking lot to await the arrival of a high-school classmate, Pony (Bartok), who made the leap from playing folk songs at the prom to a record deal complete with amenities such as rooms at the Four Seasons, a stretch limo and a hot publicist (Posey). Pony's return and showy lifestyle spark tension and introspection, as the peers he left behind resent him for his success and realize that a life of slinging slices and stuffing boxes doesn't hold much promise. Linklater's spare style lets Bogosian's incisive wit dominate the character-driven film.
