An intimate portrait of a naive man struggling to master the rage within him as he learns to form attachments in the outside world. After serving 25 years in a mental institution for murdering his mother, Karl Childers (Thornton) tries to piece together a life in a bewildering world. Childers, whose innocence is masked by his clenched jaw and throaty voice, befriends a young boy, Frank (Black), and moves in with Frank and his mother, Linda (Canerday). The move threatens Linda's boyfriend, Doyle (Yoakam), a drunken bully who torments Linda and Frank and Linda's gay friend, Vaughan (Ritter). An original film driven entirely by sharply observed characters and deeply felt portrayals.
