Sam Raimi, director of cult fav Evil Dead, redirects his macabre energies into an altogether colder film. A Simple Plan opens with two brothers and a friend romping about the Minnesota forest. They stumble across a fallen plane with a dead pilot and a fortune in cash. As in Fargo, things get nasty quickly, although Raimi's work offers no humor to defuse the mounting tension. “Do you ever feel evil?” asks Jacob (Thornton) of his respectable brother Hank (Bill Paxton). After a pause, Jacob replies in a chilling whisper: “I do.” Greed, selfishness, and distrust multiply with lethal repercussions. Fine acting (particularly by Paxton and Thornton) framed against a stark landscape make this a concise and brooding film, snowstorm noir perfect for windswept winter nights.
