So relentlessly over-the-top, so far from actual sport competition—it is almost possible for me to appreciate the grand theatrics of professional wrestling. At times one suspects that there is something deeply American in it, or at least in its understanding. And yet, I never quite understood. Perhaps I didn't watch enough cartoons in the formative years. Perhaps my mother read too much to me as a child. I need to explain why I don't like professional wrestling to explain why I cannot enjoy or endorse a movie aimed at its fans.
Ready to Rumble operates in a post-Sandler world of dumb-meets-dumber. Gordie (David Arquette) and Sean (Scott Caan) are two men who work with sewage. They idolize professional wrestler Jimmy King (Oliver Platt) and when the King loses, the young fanatics grow determined to return their hero to his former glory.
David Arquette's hyperactive humor holds center court. Oliver Platt is even more addled than his Bulworth character, hamming into Elvis references every once in awhile as he acts like a washed-up champion. Ready to Rumble offers severely limited appeal for those unfamiliar with "professional" wrestling.
