Every once in a while (though unfortunately it's been more and more frequent) a movie comes along that begs the question, “Why bother?” Phantoms is one of those films. When the residents of Snowfield, Colorado, disappear (except for a few lingering, disfigured bodies) and the sheriff (Affleck), his deputies and a young doctor (McGowan) can't figure out what happened, the FBI enlists a professor-turned-tabloid reporter, Timothy Flyte (O'Toole), to solve the mystery. Flyte and his mobile lab determine the culprit is the Ancient Enemy, a nasty monster that entrances its victims and causes them to spew forth a long, black snakelike spiral. Flyte and the somnambulant sheriff team up to rid the town of the Enemy and its followers. It's hard to believe that Affleck is the same actor who gave such a convincing, all-out performance in Good Will Hunting.
